01 / BACKGROUND

Why MAKO fights

Mako learned capoeira in a waterfront collective that rehearsed between fishing shifts. He reads balance the way his family reads weather: through small changes in pressure, rhythm, and the angle of a foot against the ground.

A luxury development now threatens the collective’s hall and the public beach beside it. Mako carries their cobalt cord into the tournament, turning every broadcast bout into an invitation to a place investors hoped nobody would notice.
